I didn’t need another jacket — I needed something for all the days when a jacket is too much

There’s a particular sort of British weather I’ve never quite known how to dress for.

Not properly cold.

Not warm either.

You step outside in a shirt or jumper and immediately think you could do with another layer.

So you put a jacket on.

Ten minutes later, you’re carrying it over your arm.

I’m 58, and I’ve accumulated more than enough jackets over the years.

What I actually needed was something in between.

Too cool for just a shirt. Far too mild for one of my proper jackets.

I’d always thought gilets were either too sporty or too bulky

That was probably why I’d never seriously considered one.

Most of the ones I’d seen looked like something you’d wear hiking, or they were thick padded versions that felt almost as substantial as a coat anyway.

Then I came across the Larchford Utility Gilet from Merritt London.

What caught my attention was how straightforward it looked.

No padded bulk.

No overly technical details.

Just a structured sleeveless layer with a few proper pockets.

I ordered one mainly for weekends.

It has ended up being far more useful than that.

It fills the gap between “just a shirt” and “put a jacket on”

That’s the simplest way I can describe it.

I wear mine over a T-shirt when I’m pottering about.

Over a casual shirt when I’m going into town.

And over a light jumper when the morning starts off cooler.

Because it has no sleeves, it adds another layer without making me feel as though I’ve dressed for weather that hasn’t actually arrived yet.

And when I’m driving, doing jobs outside or walking into town, I don’t have the same feeling of a jacket getting in the way.

Enough of an extra layer to be useful, without feeling as though I’ve put a full jacket on.

The pockets turned out to be more useful than I expected

This is probably the most typically male reason I’ve ended up wearing it so much.

It has three patch pockets.

Phone.

Keys.

Wallet.

Glasses.

All the usual bits I’d otherwise have stuffed into my trouser pockets or left somewhere around the house.

For walks, errands, the garden or travelling, that alone makes it useful.

It feels less like something I have to “style” and more like something I simply put on because it makes sense.

And it still looks presentable

That matters more to me now than it did twenty years ago.

I don’t want to look dressed up every time I leave the house.

But I also don’t particularly want to look as though I’ve just thrown on whatever was closest.

The button front and cleaner utility shape give the Larchford a bit more structure than simply wearing another jumper or old fleece.

That means I can wear it over something very ordinary and still feel reasonably put together.

No real thought required.

Practical first. But it happens to make a simple shirt and trousers look a bit more considered too.

It’s become the layer I grab when I’m not sure what the weather is doing

Which, in Britain, is quite often.

I still own jackets.

Obviously.

But there are plenty of days when I don’t actually want one.

That’s when the Larchford makes sense.

Something over my shirt.

A few useful pockets.

Enough structure to look decent.

And I’m out the door.

It’s just enough of an extra layer to be useful, without feeling like I’ve put a proper jacket on.
